The Influence of Paclobutrazol on the Growth and Flowering of Potted Gladiolus (Gladiolus gandavensis)

Abstract
Studies with paclobutrazol treatment were conducted on pot-grown Gladiolus gandavensis, and the results obtained thus are summarized as follows:
1. Although there was difference in the effect as cultivars (cv.) varied, the flowering rate was increased more when treated at 4-leaf stage than the 2-leaf, and more with foliar spray than soil drench.
2. Plant height for cv. Hunting Song was reduced more when treated 2-leaf than the 4-leaf stage, whereas cv. Spic & Span showed almost no difference in it. Soil drench of paclobutrazol had more dwarfing influence than the foliar application, and higher concentration of it had the more influence than the lower.
3. Spike length showed no significant difference between treatments at 2-leaf and 4-leaf stage. However, the higher concentration of paclobutrazol was treated, the shorter spike length occurred. Soil drench of paclobutrazol reduced sprike length as compared with foliar spray.
4. Number of flowers per spike and floret diameter were either somewhat increased or decreased by diff erent periods of the treatment or the method of application, and flower quality exhibited no meaningful change.
5. Flower longevity for cv. Hunting Song was markedly reduced by paclobutrazol treatments.
6. Corm fresh weight when harvested was heavier with the treatment of foliar application than siol drench, while there was no difference between the treatments in the number of cormels.
